The Stockholm Region

Stockholm is the leafy capital city of Sweden. Situated on the Baltic Sea, with its own archipelago of 24,000 islands, wherever you turn you seem to see the sea. It's also a vibrant, modern, stylish centre of the Nordic countries, with a strong reputation for quality film-making, led for nearly 50 years by the late Ingmar Bergmann.

  • New Film talent and film culture is nurtured in the supportive environment of Film Stockholm, a regional resource center working in the whole spectrum of the audiovisual field. Among other things Film Stockholm co-finances short and documentary film production and projects that develop media literacy. Film Stockholm collaborates with Fanzingo in a fresh initiative for young film-makers.
  • New Film and TV talent as well as professional training is nurtured at the 'Dramatiska Institutet', the national Film School. The Institute has its own very impressive studios catering for the needs of the limited number of students.
  • Stockholm is seen as a centre of creative and outward-looking industry professionals, who are used to cooperating with other Nordic countries, with whom they share linguistic and cultural similarities (Norway and Denmark in particular) but are now keen to establish new links across Europe in all areas of film production.
  • To increase both local and international audiovisual production within the region a body of public and private partners has newly launched the initiative of Filmpool Stockholm-Mälardalen. The initiative has already given birth to the Stockholm Film Commmission. The next step is to establish a regional film fund.
  • The Stockholm region offers some of the most dynamic, quirky and innovative film festivals in Europe. As well as the adult festival taking place in November, the 'Junior Film Festival', involving 10,000 or more, young people during the course of the year culminates in the showing of their work in April. The Tempo festival is the main venue for local and international documentary film in Sweden held in March.
  • The Swedish Film Institute works with organisations around the world and outside of the Stockholm region organising events showcasing Swedish films.
  • As part of Sweden's very 'inclusive' approach, one of the Swedish Government's aims, through the Swedish Film Institute, is to increase the number of women directors so that at least 40% of all major films are directed, written and produced by women.
